They have been very cooperative about posing for pictures. It appears that Aperture is updating the Flickr sets and messing up the static URLs. Every day I'm at work I wish I was out in the field. <br /><br />Number two: Take lots of pictures. Digital memory is cheap. Just keep shooting.<br /><br />Number three: Understand your camera's controls. I'm still figuring out how to do this, and I've had the camera for years!<br /><br />Number four: Always be ready. Birds do seem to have an inherent sense of when we're not paying attention. Then they do interesting things!<br /><br />Number five: Get closer! I've found that using a blind really helps. If that's not an option, get the birds to come to you. Use food or calls to get them closer. Remember not to overdo it with recorded calls. Can I really accomplish this? <br /><br />First stop, Lake Remembrance. Trumpeter Swans and lots and lots of Gadwalls still hanging out. I've already saturated you with shots of swans, so we'll skip those.<br /><br />Next stop: North Marina, Lake Jacomo. Today there were quite a few die-hard crappie fishermen there, so not many waterfowl. Gotta give those guys some props. I love crappie as much as any red-blooded Missourian, but I doubt I'd be fishing even on a day as nice as today. <br /><br />Let's see what's going on at Burroughs Audubon Center. The feeders there are a sure bet. When I arrived I was somewhat taken aback by the number of cars there. Bird-banding in progress! Very enlightening. Nice to meet all you folks I only know from MOBIRDS-L. <br /><br />Someone mentioned that a Savannah Sparrow had been seen earlier. Down by the dam, there was some open water. Driving along the dam, I noticed something. Some of those white bodied waterfowl were bigger than the Common Goldeneyes. Apparently some folks there thought that this was a negative development. I say that anything that encourages the public to take an interest in wildlife and wildlife conservation is a good thing. I think the birding community is like any community of enthusiasts. They often times dismiss the casual partaker of their obsession as "pikers." I really think there's no room for such snobiness when it comes to protecting the wildlife we love and the habitats they require. It's very shy. Most birds are cool as long as you don't get out of your car. This bird splits the minute you stop the car! I really, REALLY wanted this to be a Rough-Legged Hawk. Then I wanted it to be a dark morph Harlan's Hawk. This got me so worked up that I left work early and hied to the south Marina area of the lake. Much to my chagrin, I never managed to find the LTD. Now I know when something unusual has been sighted in my neck of the woods. Just this week, I learned that Trumpeter Swans were to be found at Lake Remembrance in Blue Springs, just around the corner from my house!
